Here's a new spin on this topic. I've tracked the biorhythms of athletes for over 30 years and have been very successful at determining the outcome of games especially versus the point spread. Through my research I've found that all living things have a "biorhythm" including horses. Now my question for you and all racehorse trainers, is could you make a profit if you knew when your horses were at their best physically and emotionally? I believe your answer should be Yes! You would have to bet on your horse but having tracked the biorhythms of jockeys and horses I find it predictable. I am working on my new software for this. How to make $ in the Horse business? Be a vet., blacksmith, sell feed, hay and straw. Other than that take your best shot and hope you can catch Lighting in a bottle.

its rare to make money with that cheap a horse but if you buy at a high profile track such as churchill florida california they might be worth more at a lesser track - thinking about the shipping cost and the gas to get there has to be thought in the equation, best to have your own rig. Then people at the cheaper track probably won't have the money to buy the horse because purses are low and there isn't as much money around to spend on buying a horse. so you might have to run and determine his worth that way, and if you win a couple races you make money and sell before you leave to go back to the good tracks to buy the next horse.
